How to set up a scratch disk in final cut pro

Final cut pro is a series of non linear editing software programs developed by Macromedia inc which is now run by Apple Inc. Our task is to create a scratch disk in on that software. A scratch disk allows your work to be used on different computers as not completing this process means you cannot access the work on a different computer meaning you could lose your work which would then follow by you having to start the task again, so overall this is a very important step before starting the task.

Here is step one

Which is selecting the program which is the icon of the directing clapper board. If it is not at the bottom with the list of the programs you then open applications of finder and scroll down to Final cut pro. This then leads to step two.

Step two

This is what the program would look like and if it does not appear as this you could have opened the wrong program, to hid the program you press "command + H" . Also make sure all the screen is full as if there is blank part of it, some of the program is missing. All the tabs are at the top of the screen and if it states "Final cut pro" on the top left that is the program you have open for example if you have Google chrome open it will say "Chrome" on the top left"

Step three

As I mentioned before the "final cut pro" tab is on the top left, this will take you to the next part which you select on the tab. You then click onto system settings which will open the file you need to be able to continue in making the scratch dic.

Step Four

It is supposed to look like this and if it does not then you have not opened the right file on the tabs, It is useful to remember these steps to reach this as you would have to do this every time you create a new project in the future.

Step Five

You can see the different choices that are here and select set which is the top one as there are 6 different choices at the moment and you begin with the top choice. This will direct you for where you want to save the work.

Step Six

Save the work into Hd 2 which is a saving area which is available to all Apple macs  so you can open the work onto different computers. Remember to not save on the DESKTOP as this means you will only be able to access the work onto that computer which again as I said before you oculd lose your work if someone accidentally deletes it.

Step seven

You the create a new folder and call it a sensible and memorable name so you know what file to access, All the work should be saved in this area so it is easier to access.

step eight

You then select these three and save in the same file and it should look like this at the end create at new project

Press ok and the scratch disk is created and then finally create new project on 'fILE.

History of editing

Editing essay

Edwin S Porter was famous for deciding to cut a scene in a film which had never been done before in a film. Edwin changed that as years ago people would just film until it ran out without any idea when to finish.  He was also a writer and director however it was his editing technique that really changed the game for films. He also was the first director to have a film have a narrative process from scene to scene. D.W. Griffith was the next major editor in the film industry who advanced the ideas of Porter and created many attributes of film we use today, such as the close up, which at the time was regarded as hugely controversial as many people complained that you have to be able to see the whole actor's body. Similar to Porter he was a writer and director where he showed his techniques, which was how he invented the close up because he was also the man behind the camera for the film, "The Orphan of the Storm".  Another skill he used was cross-cutting which is used almost every film since he started it, however the first film to use cross-cutting which was "life of an american fireman" which had a scene where firemen came to save a woman in a building and it cuts between the two locations. This was a hugely effective technique in film as it allowed the scene to create tension and drama as you don't know if the woman will make it out alive. The techniques that they both developed help tell a film's story and if it wasn't for the technique of cutting a film, it would not have been made. Then the techniques made by D.W.Griffith helped put a film together for example if we did not have close ups, emotional scenes that have been made would not nearly the same effect and could ruin a scene if not used. Another technique that is hugely important is cross-cutting which helps put scenes in a story together. A key film that Edwin S Porter was the Great Train Robbery. It was the first film to have a narrative and a technique used was using a variety of different shots.  There are many people in the film industry who have been influenced by Edwin and Griffiths such as John FordAlfred Hitchcock[22] Orson WellesLev Kuleshov,[23] Jean Renoir,[24] Cecil B. DeMille,[25] King Vidor,[26] Victor Fleming,[27] Raoul Walsh,[28] Carl Theodor Dreyer,[29] Sergei Eisenstein[30] and Stanley Kubrick. They also respect his work and even Orson wells said the only part of Hollywood he hated was the way Griffith was treated in Hollywood. Another Hollywood legend called Charlie Chaplin named Griffith "The teacher of us all", who also had influenced many people as well so Griffith is a person who was part of creating the conventions of film which are techniques we still us today. Edwin S porter was the man who influenced film making the most as he was the one to introduce some of the most vital techniques in film which are building blocks of films, which then were advanced by Griffith who added a vast amount of techniques which are also fundamental to films today.

Walter Murch is famous editor and sound designer.  He has also been part of some of the most popular and well regarded films of all time. He has made pieces of material to help study and give knowledge to new editors who want to be part of films. A technique that Walter Murch developed was a rule of six which is lists as emotion, which my Murch is vital and says that you must have emotion and without it your movie is in trouble. The next one is story and it should be dynamic and motion behind it. The next rule is Rythm is something that is unaware to the audience however if it is done badly it will be clear to the audience. The next one is eye trace which is that a cut must not disorient the viewer, to the extent that their eyes cannot comprehend the action. The next is two dimensional plane on screen this is following the 180 degree rule which prevents the audience from being confused as to which direction the character is walking. Last is the rule of three dimensional space, this is to help create clarity of space. Walter Murch has worked on a huge amount of key films. A key film that really showed his techniques was the cold mountain which was the first time a film had used off the shelf computer programmes to edit a film especially for a film that had a fairly big budget. Walter Murch has influenced a huge amount of people who work in the film industry as he has worked on films such as The Godfather 1,2 and the apocalypse now which are regarded some of the best films of all time. Many editors and directors are influenced by these films and have used the techniques of them, from the directing to the cinematography, to the editing.

I looked at the opening scene of Apocalypse Now which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Typically a scene with the exploding trees would be expected to be in the climax but instead is the opening shot of the film. The scene features super Impositions which is when an action or process is imposed. It also has a use of slow motion helicopters to give the impression of a flashback and manage to give a visual of both the main character and what is in his mind at the same time. There is isn't a change in diegetic time as it just has a flashback while it has martin sheen in real time sleeping, this is part of the effect of it. Alot of narrative is explained it such little time which is by the effective use of editing as it has the story shown visually and adding mystery and character development to Martin Sheen. There is a combination of shots while it is the same shot of the main character which helps add narrative to the opening scene, also in any opening scene it can help the film if the story is explained.

Overall editing is a huge part of film and is what actually helped make film into what it is now. Also without Edwin s porter film could have never made the leap as he was the first person to decide to cut film and DW Griffith changed editing and his techniques are still used today. However a huge amount of people have helped be part of the film industry as we know it and film should always change and progress as having it be similar will be the end of film as people will lose interest. Editing is one of the most crucial parts to make a great film and without great editing the film can get lost. However a bad film cannot get fully saved by a great editor. As the director is even more important than the editor and will often work with the editor in the post production process.

Editing Q and A

Introduction to editing

The Gloaming

What is editing?
It is the process of selecting different shots and putting them together to tell a story, also helps build a films narrative.

What is Elliptical editing? It is a technique used in editing to have the on screen duration be shorter than the story. In the case of the video we have a shot of a character waking up but does not show she has been asleep. It allows to fill in the gaps, moves the story on more quickly and takes up less actual time.

Why are long shots used? It is used to remind us where she is and tells us she is alone. It is also followed by a blurry close up which would cause an effect on the audience.

• What is ‘non-diagetic sound’? it is sound that the characters in the film cannot hear, which is not playing at the lake but crucially the audience can hear it which can be used to create ambiguity. In this situation the music adds to the disquieting mood, which creates tension and unease.

.How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (what shots are used and why?)
We know she is bending down to pick the ring because we have a close up of her and then you see her eyes direct towards the floor and you see her lean her head down to the floor. The next shot is of her hand reaching for the ring which follows the previous shot. This also fills in the gaps so we know it was the ring she was looking at. This is a quicker way of telling the same story as the director could have had a a long and show her bending down. This creates a meaning and maintaining the viewers attention.

The hustle

.Overhead establishing shot – what does this achieve?
The director sets out the space which the action will take place and the characters positions within the room, also this conveys that the man with the back the head facing the characters has authority in this scene.

• What is Shot-Reverse-Shot?
It is cutting from one shot of a character to another in repetition, this simply means going back and forth between the two members, to make us assume they are looking at and talking to one another. Essential to the shot is eyeline match.

.What is Eyeline match?
In this case the man standing up is looking down while the man sitting down is facing up to wards the other actor. This would make us assume that they are looking at each other.

Why do we cut to the other members of the group?
This is so you can see the reactions of the clan after one of them made his point, this helps with character development. This is also why he is talking so it can tell the story quicker.

What is a wipe?
It is a slick transition to move action from one location to another, in a different time, which then shows a screwed diagonal shot of the building. This is part of the mise en scene (setting, lighting, non-verbal communication, costume, props).

• What is the effect of using quick cuts?
In this case we understand that in the story they want to complete tasks quickly, the quick cuts create a fast rhythm, which will keep the story moving along and keeps the audience on their toes.

B Editing: the  invisible art

How can editing build tension and pace? If there is rarely in any cuts in a scene it will slow the pace down of the film , while doing the opposite and having a huge amount of cuts will speed the pace of the film.

• What is crosscutting?

is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously in two different places. This can even happen in the same place such as when two characters interact.

• What are reaction shots? This will happen when it the camera closes up on a characters reaction to a situation or event. For example they could have a character react to a person lying dead on the floor and they would show the reaction of the person first before they show the body to add tension tot he scene.

• What is seamless editing? style of film editing and video editing in the post-production process of filmmaking of narrative films. This will help smooth the finished product and prevent the audience the audience from noticing that a cut was made and seems there was never a cut made. This also helps create a logical story to understand.

• What is a jump cut? A jump cut is a cut in film editing in which two sequences of  shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly. This type of edit gives the effect of jumping forwards in time.

• What is a flash back and what does it achieve? This can help give nack story to a scene and help improve character development some films even open in a flashback which will help the audience understand what has happened before.

• How can editing be used poetically? For example there could be two scenes which have nothing in common and putting them together could change the movie poetically as just having scenes just follow one another would not change much about the editing.

C Playing with time

The video begins with two of the characters riding on a motorbike then it suddenly cuts to the girl after an amount of time using a quick cut. This is effective as this will have a huge effect on the audience as they will suddenly be shocked as this then shows her scared and lost all her clothes in a creepy forest which is a huge contrast to before. It then cuts back and forth which will add more tension as this make the audience ask questions as to what happened before. Then suddenly there is a shot reverse shot but is used a flash black as it has her looking at the man asked her to get on the motorbike before everything went bad. The next shot is her actually getting on the motorbike as if you going through the flashback in her eyes, also a cit back to where she is now before an establishing shot is used to show where she is and what a contrast it is to the opening shot. I start to realise that if cuts back on forth almost all the time as if the story is playing out in her head while she is walking around and make the audience be put into her shoes as she reacts to the flashbacks as they happen. We then have the shot of the woman picking up the ring and then music plays which is purposely out of place to convey her feelings at that point in time, we then have as set of flashbacks which are cut quickly together as if the character is actually dreaming about them as the next quick cut of her is waking up. We then have sudden quick cuts of the man as it leads to the moment when you find his shirt in the water, which was shown in the other video. Also the non diegetic music in the background adds so much more tension to the video as without music you wouldn't think much is going on but the use of music and quick cuts the man add an extra layer of suspense as to where he might be and what happened as the main protagonist starts to remember what might have happened.

Film editor

There are many aspects needed to be an editor, to summarise a key part of being an editor is being creative as you need to be able to find the best way to edit the scenes together as really uncreative and dull editing can cause the viewer to lose focus as they may get bored, example if one shot is to convey different motions it will look unappealing. Also you would need experience in the filmmaking process such as post production which take up to a year to complete, this means you will need to be a ble to lead other members in the team as the editor is the leader of a collaborative effort for the editing. Another extremely key aspect of editing is being able to work with the director as they have more control over the film and may ask for certain features to be added into their scenes. For example a director could have a style used in his films and the director will ask for you to fulfil that in the editing phase. The editor will also work very closely with is the cinematographer as they will decide together what would be the best way to fulfil the vision of the director for example i fthe ditor decides to cut out etsbalishing shots
